IoT Network

We were the first city in the Czech Republic to launch an Internet of Things (IoT) Network, which we use primarily to support education, development and research.

Aims of the project:

To build and operate an urban IoT network and use it for:

  • Education, research, testing, projects – we have made the network available free of charge to students, schools, anyone who wants to learn, invent or test something. The reason is simple – we want to have more innovative companies and start-ups in Pilsen,
  • City companies – water meter readings, sensor data transfer, etc.

Results of the project:

In January 2017, SITMP launched an IoT network on the open LoRaWAN platform in the unlicensed 868 MHz band, more at IoT Plzeň.

It is a wireless network based on LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network) technology, which enables simple and energy-efficient long-range communication. This network can be used to connect and communicate with sensor units from locations where no other suitable access technology or power supply is available and subsequently enable the processing of data sent by the sensors.

At present, the network is ready to be made available to municipal organisations. For example, Vodárna Plzeň a.s. used the network for remote reading of water meters in 2020, of which over three thousand were in operation that year. Students can also register their own sensor units and process the data obtained.
