Eduroam

Pilsen is the first city in the Czech Republic to provide the Eduroam wireless network, which is used by people all over the world. Its main advantage is its verifiability, security and guaranteed technical level. This network can be used by anyone with an account. The City will provide new registration options to its employees and to city established primary schools.

Aims of the project:

To connect the city wifi network (including free wifi) to the Eduroam network.

Results of the project:

Pilsen is a member of the Eduroam network as the first city in the Czech Republic. Eduroam is an abbreviation of the term Education Roaming. It is a computer infrastructure for transparent use of networks. The idea originated at TERENA (Trans-European Research and Education Networking Association).

The aim is to interconnect the networks of all participants in such a way that a user of one network can connect to any of them under one account (maintained on home network). The consequence is the same ease of use as mobile roaming.

Technically, subscriber login is handled by RADIUS servers. In the Czech Republic, the project is under the auspices of the CESNET association, which has been involved in the project from the very beginning as a coordinator and promoter of activities related to computer roaming not only in the Czech Republic, but also in other European countries (Portugal, Great Britain, Belgium, France, Germany, Croatia, Hungary and Poland). The project logo was created by the well-known Czech author Pavel Satrapa. In addition to Europe, the network also includes Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Canada, Taiwan and the USA.
