Digital twin – DUET project (HORIZON 2020)

Pilsen will have a digital twin based on an accurate 3D model of the city. It will be possible to effectively model situations that may arise in the regional capital. These are various crisis scenarios or operational situations related to transport, air, water flows, construction, urban planning, but also firefighting operations, in the event of fires, floods, etc.

Aims of the project:

DUET aims to create a digital twin of a city, and a 3D model.

The digital twin will allow us to model different crisis events/states and design countermeasures for them, resulting in more effective management of these overlapping events to reduce property damage, save lives, etc.

Another overlap between the twin and the 3D model is related to the development of the city, its urban planning, transport services, environmental quality, etc.



Results of the project:

The benefit of the DUET project for Pilsen will be the acquisition of a so-called digital twin based on an accurate 3D model of the city. The 3D model of the city and its integration into the applications under development will enable effective modelling of situations that may arise in the regional capital. This includes various crisis scenarios or operational states related to events in the transport, aviation, construction and urban planning sectors. The 3D model can also be useful for firefighting operations during fires, floods, etc.

Within DUET, the City of Pilsen will have free access to e.g. results on noise pollution in Pilsen and software tools for modelling and visualisation (e.g. traffic intensity and air pollution). The visualisation apps developed within the project are based on open source platforms (i.e. cheap and replicable in other cities).

A digital twin can also be defined as a real-time model of a city that allows us to model different situations (traffic, environment, urban planning) and answer questions about what is happening in the real world. In order for a digital twin to work properly, it is necessary to have valid source data (3D model, traffic model, data from various sensors, etc.), its thorough processing, appropriate modelling algorithms and the creation of appropriate visualisations. The output of the created applications should then become suitable documents for the political representation of the city, provide interesting information about the solved problems and thus improve the decision-making of the stakeholders.

Access to alpha version

In addition to Pilsen, the digital twin project also involves Athens, Greece, and the Belgian region of Flanders. Experts from all over the European Union were working together on the project, and in addition to the Czech Republic, partners from Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, the UK and Belgium are involved.

DUET European Project Award

The award received at the prestigious Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona on 17 November 2021 is proof of the project’s usefulness. Duet was awarded Best Technical Project and was the only international project to be recognised at the World Congress Awards. Other finalists in this category came from Qatar and the UK.
